Robert Fulton Biography

Biography: Life of Robert Fulton

Born 1765, Died 1815; Inventor of the Steamboat

Robert Fulton was born on November 14, 1765 in Fulton Township, Pennsylvania. Being from a poor family, he received little formal education. Fulton however had a talent for art and an interest in mechanics.

Robert Fulton went to Philadelphia where he worked for a jeweler and studied art. When he was twenty-one Fulton went to London to further his studies with painter Benjamin West. In England Fulton became interested in engineering. He worked on a number of inventions including dredging machines, flax-spinning and ropemaking devices and a canal lock substitute.

Fulton traveled to France in 1797 to seek financial aid from the French government in the development of a torpedo-firing submarine. They were not interested. Fulton was also doing steamboat experiments on the Seine. These experiments led to a partnership with Robert Livingston, the United States minister to France.

Robert Fulton returned to the United States to work on his steamboat. On August 17, 1807, Robert Fulton’s steamboat, the Clermont, sailed from New York to Albany and back to New York. The boat was put into service between the two cities.

After this success, Robert Fulton continued to build steamboats and established and managed steamboat lines.

In 1814 Robert Fulton was commissioned to build the first steam warship. He died on February 14, 1815 before it was put into service.
