Biography: Life of William McKinley
Born 1843 Died 1901; Served as President of the United States 1897-1901.
William McKinley was born on January 29, 1843 in Niles, Ohio. He attended school in Poland, Ohio and was an able orator.
McKinley served in the Civil War, advancing to the rank of major. After the war he studied law.
In 1871 William McKinley married Ida Saxton. They had two daughters, who both died as young children.
McKinley was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1876 and served for fourteen years. He was governor of Ohio from 1892 to 1986. McKinley was active in the national Republican Party and, using his gift for oratory, gave many speeches for candidates around the country.
Having gained national recognition, William McKinley became president in 1897. In 1898 the sinking of the Maine in Havana harbor started the Spanish-American War. The United States became a world power during McKinley’s administration, gaining territories around the world and helping to suppress the Boxer Rebellion in China.
William McKinley began his second term as president in 1901. On September 6, 1901, at a public reception in Buffalo, New York, William McKinley was shot in an assassination attempt by Leon Czolgosz, an anarchist. William McKinley died on September 14, 1901 from his wound. He is buried in Canton, Ohio.
