Biography: Life of Benjamin Harrison
Born 1833 Died 1901; Served as President of the United States 1889-1893.
Benjamin Harrison was born on August 20, 1833 in North Bend, Ohio at the home of his grandfather, President William Henry Harrison. He attended Farmers’ College and Miami College in Ohio and later studied law.
In 1853 Benjamin Harrison married Caroline (Carrie) Scott and moved to Indiana. They had two children.
Benjamin Harrison served in the Civil War, advancing to the rank of brigadier general of volunteers. Harrison was a United States senator from 1881 to 1887.
Benjamin Harrison became president in 1889. During his administration high tariffs were placed on foreign goods and the Sherman Anti-Trust Act was passed.
Harrison lost hid bid for a second term to Grover Cleveland and in 1893 retired to Indianapolis. Benjamin Harrison died on March 13, 1901.
