Biography: Life of King Louis XVI of France
Born 1754, Died 1792; Reigned from 1774-1792.
Louis XVI was born in 1754 and ruled France from 1774 to 1792.
With the loss of French influence abroad and increasing dissent at home, Louis XVI lacked the disposition and qualities to rule France. He relied heavily on the advice of others. The finances of the kingdom improved under the management of his financial minister. His extravagant queen, Marie Antoinette, opposed financial reform and convinced Louis XVI to dismiss the financial minister.
As conditions grew worse, Louis XVI called a meeting of the Estates-General, which declared itself a national assembly. This was the first step in the French Revolution. For a time Louis XVI worked with the assembly, but the influence of Marie Antoinette was too strong. Louis XVI went back on his promises and attempted to flee France to seek aid from Austria.
Realizing that they could not trust the king, on August 10, 1792 the French people stormed the royal palace. The royal family escaped to the Legislative Assembly, which suspended Louis XVI from office and ordered the imprisonment of the king and his family. Louis XVI was brought to trial and sentenced to death for conspiring with foreign countries for the invasion of France. The following day he was beheaded by guillotine.
